Sangamon County, IL Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 17.50.090 is titled "The Storage Of Certain Vehicles In Residentially Zoned Areas" and does two things in two sentences. First it bars storage: "Garbage trucks, construction machinery or other motor vehicles which have an adverse impact on residential areas shall not be stored on residentially zoned lots." Then it carves out an allowance: "Residents shall be allowed to have one commercial vehicle of not more than a two-ton capacity kept on a residentially zoned lot."

The ban names two categories outright, garbage trucks and construction machinery, and then adds a catch-all for other motor vehicles with an adverse impact on residential areas. The section does not list those other vehicles or set a noise or size test for the catch-all, so the adverse-impact judgment sits with the county's zoning enforcement.

The allowance is narrow. It covers residents, it is limited to one commercial vehicle per residentially zoned lot, and the vehicle must be of not more than a two-ton capacity. The section does not define "commercial vehicle," does not say how two-ton capacity is measured, and does not create a permit, registration or fee for the vehicle. A second commercial vehicle, or a heavier one, is outside the allowance. A garbage truck or piece of construction machinery is barred even if it would otherwise fit the weight limit, because the first sentence names those vehicles specifically.

The section sits in Chapter 17.50, whose purpose clause, Section 17.50.010, lists among its aims "to increase safety and lessen congestion in the public streets" and "to eliminate the on-street storage of vehicles." That purpose explains why the county treats vehicle storage on a home lot as a zoning matter rather than leaving it to neighbors.

This is county zoning for the unincorporated area of Sangamon County. Springfield, Chatham and the other incorporated municipalities have their own codes governing truck parking on their streets and lots.
