Jefferson Parish, LA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Sec. 36-161, titled to be "strictly construed to deter nuisance activities and preserve the integrity of residential districts," governs on-street parking of trucks in or next to residential zoning. Subsection (c) bars parking any heavy commercial vehicle, commercial van, trailer, or bus on a public street, roadway, right-of-way, or sidewalk area within, or sharing a boundary with, a residential district or a one-to-four-family residential site, except for emergency vehicles on call, crews actively repairing public utilities or infrastructure, or vehicles making an actual delivery, pickup, or service call.

Sec. 36-160 defines a "heavy commercial vehicle" as one used for hire that also exceeds eight feet in height, exceeds 21 feet in length, carries an apportioned plate, rides on seven or more wheels, has three or more axles, or carries special equipment like a crane or electronic message board. Subsection (b) lets a resident of a one-to-four-family site keep two light commercial vehicles (vans or trucks eight feet or under, six wheels or fewer, two axles, ten or fewer passengers), but only one may sit on the street at a time, and it must directly abut the resident's own lot rather than a neighboring site, another street, or an alley.

Off the street, Sec. 40-661(h) separately bars storing a heavy commercial vehicle on a residential site outright, except during the same temporary emergency, utility-repair, or delivery circumstances, while allowing one commercial van or trailer and up to two light commercial vehicles to be kept off-street if they meet setback and screening rules.
