Summary

Charleston can mark a no-parking zone by painting the curb yellow instead of posting a sign, and the painted length sets the no-parking area.

In addition to or in lieu of posting official traffic-control signs to establish a no parking zone or area, a no parking zone or area may be established by painting the curb yellow; and the length of such curb as so painted yellow shall be the length of such no parking zone or area; and the yellow paint shall constitute an official traffic control marker indicating a no parking zone or area.

Full Breakdown

Under Sec. 114-564 of the Charleston Code, the city can establish a no-parking zone either with official traffic-control signs or by painting the curb yellow. Wherever a curb is painted yellow, that paint alone counts as an official traffic-control marker, and the no-parking zone runs exactly as long as the painted section. Drivers don't need a posted sign present to be bound by a yellow curb: the paint itself carries legal force under this section.

Violations & Fines

Parking against a yellow-painted curb is treated the same as parking in a signed no-parking zone and is enforceable as a parking violation under Sec. 114-564, subject to the general penalty in Sec. 1-8.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a sign required in addition to the yellow paint?
No. Sec. 114-564 allows curb painting in addition to or in lieu of posted signs: the yellow paint by itself is an official traffic-control marker.
How long is a yellow-curb no-parking zone?
It runs the same length as the section of curb actually painted yellow.
