Arlington Heights does not officially sanction the practice of saving shoveled-out parking spots with chairs or other objects. The village discourages space saving and may remove items placed in the public right-of-way.
Unlike the City of Chicago, Arlington Heights does not have a formal dibs or space-saving program. The practice of placing chairs, cones, or other objects in the street to reserve shoveled-out parking spots is discouraged by the village. Items placed in the public right-of-way to save parking spaces may be removed by Public Works crews during routine operations. The village overnight parking ban from November through March reduces the occurrence of space-saving disputes since most vehicles must be off the street during overnight hours anyway. Residents are encouraged to park in driveways and garages during winter months. Disputes over parking spaces should be directed to the Police Department non-emergency line at (847) 368-5300.
Placing objects in the public right-of-way to reserve parking may result in removal of those items. No specific fine structure exists for dibs, but obstruction of the right-of-way may be cited under general ordinances.
