Arlington Heights allows installation of home EV chargers with standard electrical permits. The village has not imposed restrictive regulations on residential EV charging and Illinois law supports EV charging access rights for homeowners and renters.
Residents of Arlington Heights may install Level 1 and Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at their homes. A standard electrical permit is required for Level 2 (240-volt) charger installations, obtained through the Community Development Department. Illinois law (765 ILCS 1045/) prohibits HOAs and condominium associations from unreasonably restricting EV charger installation by unit owners. The village has public EV charging stations at various municipal facilities. Charging cables may not extend across public sidewalks or rights-of-way. Illinois offers various incentives and rebates for EV charger installation through the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act programs. Contact Community Development at (847) 368-5200 for electrical permit requirements.
Installing a Level 2 charger without an electrical permit may result in a stop-work order and requirement to obtain proper permits. No fines specific to EV charging exist.
