Schaumburg permits installation of home EV charging stations with appropriate electrical permits. The village has expanded public EV charging infrastructure and does not impose unusual restrictions on residential charging equipment.
Residential EV charging station installation in Schaumburg requires an electrical permit for Level 2 (240-volt) chargers. Standard Level 1 charging using a regular household outlet does not require a permit. The electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician and pass village inspection. Chargers should be installed in garages or on the side of the dwelling and must not create tripping hazards with charging cables across sidewalks or driveways. The village has installed public EV charging stations at various municipal facilities and commercial areas. Illinois offers EV charging incentives through the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act and ComEd rebate programs. HOAs may not unreasonably restrict EV charger installations under Illinois law. Contact Community Development at (847) 895-4500 for electrical permits.
Installing a Level 2 charger without an electrical permit may result in code violations. Charging cables creating obstructions on public sidewalks may result in code enforcement action.
