Tinley Park does not recognize or permit 'dibs' β the Chicago winter tradition of reserving a shoveled parking space with chairs or other objects. Items placed in the public right-of-way violate obstruction and property maintenance rules and may be removed.
Unlike the City of Chicago, where 'dibs' is informally tolerated, the Village of Tinley Park does not allow residents to reserve on-street parking with lawn chairs, cones, milk crates, or other objects. Items placed in the public right-of-way to claim parking are considered obstructions under Tinley Park's street and property maintenance codes. Public Works and Police may remove such items without notice. Additionally, because Tinley Park enforces an overnight parking ban on public streets, the Chicago dibs concept is largely inapplicable β residents should use their driveways and garages for winter parking. Contact Tinley Park Public Works at (708) 444-5500 for snow-related questions.
Items placed in the public right-of-way may be removed and discarded by village crews. Repeated violations may result in property maintenance citations of $50 to $200. Altercations over saved spaces may result in criminal charges for property damage or disorderly conduct.
