Oak Park prohibits the practice of saving shoveled-out parking spots with chairs, cones, or other objects. The Village actively removes dibs items from public streets and considers space-saving a violation of the code prohibiting placement of objects in the right-of-way.
The Village of Oak Park does not permit the practice known as 'dibs' where residents place chairs, cones, trash cans, or other objects in public street parking spaces they have shoveled out after snowfall. Unlike nearby Chicago, which informally tolerates dibs, Oak Park treats placing objects in the public right-of-way as a code violation. Village crews and code enforcement officers will remove dibs items found on public streets. All on-street parking spaces are public property and cannot be reserved by individual residents. The Village encourages residents to shovel out their spaces as a courtesy but does not grant any right to reserve cleared spots. Residents are reminded that the seasonal overnight parking ban from November 15 through March 31 reduces competition for spots during snow season. The Village's Public Works Department handles removal of items placed in streets.
Items placed in the street to save parking spaces may be confiscated by the Village without notice. Residents who repeatedly place objects in the right-of-way may receive code violation notices and fines. The Village will not be responsible for items removed from the street.
