Oak Park regulates driveway construction, materials, and parking. Driveways must be constructed of approved hard-surface materials (concrete, asphalt, or pavers). Parking on unpaved surfaces or front lawns is prohibited. Driveway widths and curb cuts are regulated by the Village. A permit is required for new driveway construction or widening of existing driveways.
Under Oak Park's building and zoning codes, driveways must be constructed of approved hard-surface materials. Gravel, dirt, or grass driveways are not permitted in residential zones. Most Oak Park homes access driveways from rear alleys, with some properties having front-entry driveways on wider lots. New driveway construction or modifications to existing driveways (including widening, repaving, or changing materials) require a permit from the Building Department (708) 358-5440. Curb cuts for new driveways require approval from the Village Engineering Department. Parking on front lawns, parkways, or unpaved surfaces is strictly prohibited. Vehicles parked in driveways must not block sidewalks or extend into the public right-of-way. Permeable paver systems may be used and can qualify for stormwater management credits. The Village encourages green infrastructure approaches to driveway construction where feasible.
Parking on unpaved surfaces or front lawns carries fines of $50 to $200. Unpermitted driveway construction may result in orders to remove and reconstruct, plus fines of $100 to $500. Blocking sidewalks with parked vehicles carries parking tickets of $50.
