Delano, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Delano's front yard parking rule covers unpaved and paved ground separately, and both halves apply to any lot located in a residentially zoned district in the City.

Unpaved areas. No vehicle may be parked on any unpaved portion of a front yard setback area. Lawn and bare ground in a Delano front setback are off limits for parking.

Paved areas. Pavement alone does not create a parking space. A paved portion of the front yard setback may be used for parking only if it is designated as an access corridor, which the code identifies as the driveway, leading to an on-site parking facility. The code names a car port or garage as that facility. A paved pad beside the driveway that does not serve as the access corridor to a car port or garage does not fit the wording.

What counts as a vehicle. The section applies to any "vehicle, as defined in section 20.1.190 (Definitions)" of the Development Code, so the definition in §20.1.190 controls what is covered.

Where it applies. The rule is limited to the front yard setback area of lots in residential zones. The quoted text does not address other parts of the lot, and it contains no exception for guests or events.

Driveway standards. Delano sets minimum widths for single-family driveways under DC §20.13.60.7.b(1): at least 10 feet wide for a one-car garage and 16 feet wide for a two-car garage. Read with §20.13.20.12, the driveway is the part of the front setback where parking is allowed, so those widths shape how much front yard parking area a Delano home has.

Driveway approaches. Abandoned or unused driveway approaches in the public right-of-way must be removed and replaced with curb, gutter, and sidewalk at the owner's expense.
