Freehold Township, NJ Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 190-162 sets the off-street parking framework for the whole township, and Subsection N is direct about surfaces: no lawn area, buffer strip or other unpaved area may be used to park a motor vehicle, except on an emergency basis. If the minimum required parking on a property is not enough for the number of vehicles actually there, the code does not allow spillover onto the grass; instead, additional spaces must be added on a paved surface built to the standards set out elsewhere in the same section.

Those surrounding standards are specific: Subsection F requires all parking spaces, aisles and access drives to be graded and paved to the pavement and drainage standards in the subdivision article, Subsection E keeps parking and access drives at least 10 feet from any street line and five feet from side or rear property lines, and Subsection C confines parking areas with a capacity of more than four vehicles in single-family residential zones to the side or rear yard. Driveway width and access-point spacing are also controlled: no ingress or egress drive may meet a public road closer than 50 feet to a street intersection or 30 feet to another driveway. Together these provisions push everyday household parking onto an improved, graded driveway surface rather than a lawn, dirt patch or buffer planting area.
