The Development Code applies these standards in both the City of Lafayette and the unincorporated parish (Sec. 89-39(a)(1)). Residential driveways and parking pads may be surfaced with shell, brick, stone, aggregate, concrete, or asphalt, unpaved shell or aggregate is allowed, not just pavement, so long as the material is compacted and thick enough for safe travel in wet weather (Sec. 89-39(h)(4)b). Separately, Sec. 89-26 sets residential driveway width at 12 to 24 feet and requires a Public Works driveway permit before construction, relocation, or structural alteration, unless the work is already covered by a building or drainage-development permit.

Violations & Fines

Building or widening a driveway without a Public Works permit, or surfacing it outside the approved material and width standards, lets PW order corrective work at the owner's expense after 30 days' notice.
