Riverside County, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

The Bermuda Dunes Neighborhood Preservation Overlay (BDNPO) zone was adopted to address quality-of-life concerns specific to the Bermuda Dunes Community Council area, layering extra standards on top of whatever the underlying zone already requires. Within that boundary, Section 17.292.040(2)(d) requires improved parking areas and driveways to be built of 'hard surface materials or other similar materials, excluding asphalt,' maintained so weeds, mud and standing water don't accumulate, and caps the paved area at 40 percent of the required front and/or side yard. A driveway or parking area that was already there, or already approved, before the section's effective date is grandfathered in and exempt.

The same parking subsection bans parking any vehicle in a landscaped area, limits street parking to 72 consecutive hours within 500 yards, prohibits repairing or dismantling vehicles on the street, and restricts recreational-vehicle parking in a front yard to a driveway or improved area, with a 48-hour, twice-monthly loading exception. None of this reaches property outside the Bermuda Dunes Community Council boundary; the rest of unincorporated Riverside County, and all 28 incorporated cities, are governed by their own driveway standards instead. Enforcement runs through Section 17.292.050: the county code enforcement department is the lead agency under Ordinance No. 725's protocols, and a violation must be corrected within 20 days of the notice unless the section states otherwise.
