Unincorporated Riverside County has no countywide overnight street-parking ban. Vehicles may remain on public roads but cannot stay in one spot more than 72 hours under California Vehicle Code Β§22651(k). Overnight camping in a vehicle on public roads is prohibited under Ordinance 915 where posted and in county parks under park rules.
Unlike many desert cities, unincorporated Riverside County does not impose a blanket ban on overnight on-street parking. A vehicle may remain legally parked on a county road as long as it is operable, properly registered, and has not been in the same location more than 72 consecutive hours (CVC Β§22651(k)). After 72 hours, the Sheriff may mark, warn, and ultimately tow the vehicle as abandoned under CVC Β§22669. Sleeping in a vehicle on county roads is regulated by Ordinance 915 (camping on public property) where signage has been posted; enforcement is complaint-driven and concentrated around trailheads, riverbanks, and event venues. County parks such as Lake Skinner, Lake Cahuilla, and Idyllwild County Park have strict day-use hours and posted overnight rules; camping is permitted only in designated campsites. In WUI fire zones, during Red Flag Warnings and active incidents, the Sheriff and Cal Fire may impose immediate no-parking and no-stopping orders for evacuation access. HOAs and private communities may enforce stricter overnight rules through their CC&Rs.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Riverside County code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
