Murrieta does not have a citywide overnight parking ban on public streets, but the 72-hour rule under California Vehicle Code 22651(k) applies. Vehicles parked in the same spot longer than 72 hours may be marked and towed.
Unlike some neighboring cities, Murrieta does not impose a blanket overnight parking ban on public streets. Residents and guests may generally park on public streets overnight provided the vehicle is legally registered, operable, and complies with all other parking rules. However, California Vehicle Code Section 22651(k) authorizes removal of any vehicle parked on a public street for more than 72 consecutive hours. Police or Code Enforcement typically chalk tires or mark the vehicle, and if it has not moved a substantial distance after 72 hours it may be cited or towed at the owner's expense.
Additional overnight restrictions apply in posted zones, including near schools, parks, and certain commercial corridors, as well as in designated no-parking hours for street sweeping. Many HOA communities in Murrieta (Greer Ranch, The Colony at California Oaks, Copper Canyon) prohibit overnight street parking on private streets through CC&Rs, and HOA-contracted tow services enforce these rules. Oversized vehicles, RVs, and trailers are subject to separate rules under the municipal code and cannot remain on public streets overnight. Commercial vehicles over a certain weight are also restricted in residential zones between 10 PM and 6 AM under typical municipal provisions.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Murrieta code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
