Lafayette, LA Parking Rules: EV Charging (2026)

Division 8 of chapter 86, adopted by Ord. No. O-116-2017, § 19, creates Lafayette's electric-vehicle parking framework. 21 states its purpose is to promote sustainable and alternative transportation practices, manage the availability of parking, particularly in areas that will maximize the use of electric vehicles, and thereby improve traffic and parking circulation. 22, the director may only propose designating a public parking space for exclusive EV charging use, the actual designation requires a resolution of the city-parish council, and the restriction does not take legal effect until the public works department installs signs or markings giving notice.

23(a) prohibits parking in that space by any nonelectric vehicle, any electric vehicle not connected to the charging station, one that is connected but not actually charging, or one that has been charging for more than four hours; subsection (b) authorizes the police department to cite or remove violating vehicles. 24 lets the director set per-session use fees for publicly available charging stations, based on expected operating costs, including electricity, planning and administration, vendor management fees, routine maintenance, and enforcement, and those charging fees stack on top of, and are separate from, any general parking fee plus applicable taxes.

Because the program runs entirely through director proposal and council resolution rather than a fixed citywide rate table, the number of designated spaces, their locations, and the exact per-session fee are not fixed in the ordinance text itself but are set location-by-location as the council acts.
