Mecklenburg County and Charlotte actively support EV charging. Charlotte Strategic Energy Action Plan targets 500 public chargers by 2030. Residential Level 2 charger installation requires electrical permit but no zoning review. HOAs cannot unreasonably prohibit per emerging NC guidance.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg has over 400 public EV charging stations as of 2025 including Tesla Superchargers, Electrify America, and ChargePoint networks. Residential EV charger installation requires a Charlotte or Mecklenburg County electrical permit (typically 75 to 150 dollars) plus inspection. No zoning permit required for home use. New commercial parking facilities over 50 spaces must include EV-ready infrastructure per Charlotte UDO 19.201. Public chargers are available at Mecklenburg County government centers, Charlotte-Douglas Airport, and most shopping centers. NC does not yet have a solar-access-style EV statute, but HOAs are advised against blanket bans.
Unpermitted electrical work: 200 dollars plus mandatory inspection. ICE vehicle in EV-only space: 50 dollars in Charlotte private lots enforcing.
