Chico does not impose a citywide overnight street-parking ban. The key limit is Chico Municipal Code Section 10.20.200, which prohibits storing any vehicle, recreational vehicle, boat, or trailer on a city street or public right-of-way for more than 168 hours (7 days) in a row. Commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds GVW are separately banned from on-street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. under CMC Section 10.20.160.
Under CMC 10.20.200(A), no person who owns or controls a vehicle, RV, boat, or trailer may park or store it on any city street or public right-of-way for a consecutive period exceeding 168 hours (7 days). A partial removal, or a complete removal followed by an immediate return to the same space or any part of it, still counts as a continuous occupancy and violates the limit. CMC 10.20.200(B) and California Vehicle Code Section 22651(k) authorize the City to tow vehicles in violation. CMC 10.20.160 layers on a 2-6 a.m. ban for any commercial vehicle exceeding 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight on city streets. Preferential Parking Areas under CMC Chapter 10.30 - active around Cal State Chico south-campus neighborhoods - impose permit requirements that effectively prohibit non-resident overnight parking in posted zones. There is no general residential-street overnight ban, but tying down a single space for more than a week, leaving an oversized commercial rig overnight, or parking in a permit zone without a sticker will all draw citations.
Vehicles exceeding the 168-hour limit are towable under CVC 22651(k) and CMC 10.20.200(B). Oversize-commercial overnight violations cited under CMC 10.20.160. Towing/storage fees plus citation costs apply.
