Chatham County, GA Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Sec. 12-302, adopted April 27, 2007 as a rewrite of Article III of Chapter 12, prohibits parking or storing any motor vehicle exceeding 22 feet in length or 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, or any trailer coach, motor home, trailer, semitrailer, or truck tractor, on the road, street, or right-of-way adjacent to residentially zoned property. Two exceptions carve out the flat ban: commercial vehicles may sit there while being expeditiously loaded or unloaded, or while using mounted equipment to perform utility, street, or right-of-way work; and a motorcoach, trailer coach, or motor home may park there for a period of less than 24 hours before it must move.

Sec. 12-303 supplies the defined terms driving the section: gross vehicle weight is the manufacturer-rated empty weight plus rated carrying capacity, a trailer is any wheeled vehicle designed to be towed, and a motorcoach is a self-contained, motor-powered wheeled unit generally used for residential occupancy. This street-and-right-of-way rule is a companion to the separate Sec. 12-301, which instead bars the same oversized vehicles and RVs from parking on private lots inside residential subdivisions that carry, or have ever carried, a restrictive covenant; 12-301 governs private property, 12-302 governs the public street in front of it.

Neither 12-301 nor 12-302 states its own fine, so a violation falls under the county's general penalty clause, Sec. 2-108, which applies whenever the code declares an act unlawful without naming a specific punishment.
