Southfield, MI Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Southfield City Code § 10.1006 bars parking a motor vehicle on any public street in the City of Southfield between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. This is a blanket citywide overnight ban, not limited to particular streets or districts, and it sits in Subchapter H, the Southfield Vehicle Code, which the city council adopted under its Home Rule Cities Act authority (MCL 117.3(k)) alongside the Michigan Vehicle Code. The chief of police, or a designee, may grant permission to park on the street during the restricted hours for a period not to exceed seven days.

The code lists three qualifying circumstances: a social function is being held at the residence, construction is in progress that blocks use of a driveway or garage, or another special occasion exists where the chief or designee finds that granting permission will not be detrimental to the surrounding neighborhood. Even when granted, any such street-parking permission is capped at no more than two occasions per year for a given residence or household, so a household cannot simply renew the seven-day pass repeatedly through the year.

The section was adopted by Ord. No. 1558 in 2008 and amended by Ord. No. 1696 in 2018, giving it a relatively recent legislative history within the Southfield Vehicle Code subchapter. Because the vehicle code subchapter also adopts the Michigan Vehicle Code's penalty structure by reference under § 10.1003, enforcement of a § 10.1006 violation draws on that same penalty framework: the city cannot enforce any Michigan Vehicle Code provision carrying more than a 93-day maximum jail term, which caps the exposure for a routine overnight parking violation at the misdemeanor/civil infraction level typical of parking tickets rather than a criminal charge. Southfield Police officers, who also handle animal control citywide, are the enforcing agency for on-street parking complaints under this subchapter.
