Linden, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

1 authorizes the Linden Police Department to issue parking decals to residents of designated permit areas so they may park near their residence in excess of the standard two-hour limit that otherwise applies on Linden streets. Decals run for a three-year period beginning January 3 of the year of issue, with no prorating for partial terms, and must be displayed on the rear-view mirror facing the windshield or, if a placard, hung from the mirror. Applicants apply through the Police Department with a vehicle registration, driver's license and supporting documentation; the Chief of Police may grant permits in special circumstances, such as an owner of unoccupied property in the zone or a resident driving an employer-owned vehicle.

Municipal employees parking near City Hall, teachers near Schools #2 and #6, and seniors visiting the John T. Gregorio Recreation Center get a separate exemption from the two-hour rule while at those facilities. A 2023 amendment, Ordinance No. 67-43, bars residents of buildings approved under a Redevelopment Plan that already required off-street parking from buying a permit at all, and requires landlords and sellers of those units to give written notice that street permits are unavailable. A permit holder must surrender the decal once they no longer own or reside in the qualifying vehicle or area, and lost or stolen permits must be reported. Holding a decal never excuses a driver from other rules, including metered parking, street sweeping and bus-stop restrictions.
