Per the City of Fort Myers Community Development Department's Common Code Violations guidance, boats, trailers, and recreational vehicles may be parked on residential property only in the side or rear yards, and they must not meet the definition of an abandoned vehicle. RVs and boats stored on a residential lot must have a current license plate or registration, be operational and roadworthy, and be on an improved (paved or otherwise approved) surface, not on the lawn, sidewalk, or city right-of-way. Florida HB 1203, effective July 1, 2024, restricts how HOAs (not the city) can regulate boats and RVs.
Fort Myers does not flatly prohibit RV or boat storage on residential property, but it does channel where they may sit. The Community Development Department's Common Code Violations guidance summarizes the rule in plain terms: 'Boats, trailers, and RVs may be parked in the side or rear yards if not abandoned by definition.' In practice that means a recreational vehicle, travel trailer, or trailered boat may be kept behind the front building line of the home, but not displayed in the front yard or on the lawn. The same guidance states that 'all other vehicles must be parked in the garage, carport, or on the designated driveway, or improved parking surfaces of the residential parcel,' and 'they may not be parked on the sidewalks, in the city right-of-way, or on the lawn.' To remain compliant, the RV, trailer, or boat must (1) display a current license plate and/or registration, (2) be operational and roadworthy, and (3) sit on an improved surface (concrete, asphalt, pavers, or other approved material) rather than bare grass or dirt - the same baseline standards the city applies to passenger vehicles. Boats and RVs that no longer meet those criteria are reclassified as abandoned or junked vehicles and may be ordered removed regardless of whether they are in the side or rear yard. On-street parking of RVs and boat trailers is governed by Chapter 86 (Traffic and Vehicles) of the Code of Ordinances, which incorporates the standard Florida stopping/standing/parking framework; long-term storage of an RV or boat at the curb is treated as abandonment. For homes inside HOAs, Florida HB 1203 (effective July 1, 2024) constrains HOA boards from broadly banning a property owner's personal vehicle, recreational vehicle, or boat from the owner's parcel, but does not preempt the city's underlying yard-location and improved-surface rules. Reports of RVs or boats stored in front yards, on lawns, or in the right-of-way go to Code Enforcement at 239-321-7940.
Storing a boat, trailer, or RV in the front yard, on the lawn, on a sidewalk, or in the city right-of-way violates the City of Fort Myers' residential parking rules and is enforced by Code Enforcement at 239-321-7940. An RV or boat without current registration, that is inoperable or not roadworthy, or that sits on bare grass or dirt is treated as an abandoned/junked vehicle and is subject to a notice of violation, fines through the Special Magistrate process, and removal. Long-term on-street parking of an RV or boat trailer is enforced under Chapter 86 (Traffic and Vehicles).
