Summary

Grant County, Wisconsin, requires a boat landing trailer parking permit to park a boat, canoe or vehicle trailer at the Wyalusing and O'Leary landings and any other County-owned landing lot posted with a permit sign. A 24-hour permit costs $5 and an annual permit costs $20. These sections cover landing lots only, not yards or driveways.

These county ordinances apply to unincorporated areas of Grant County. Incorporated cities within the county may have their own rules that take precedence over county-level regulations.

Full Breakdown

Article III of Chapter 267 of the Code of Grant County was adopted 3-16-2010 as Ord. No. 56 and sets the only trailer parking permit in the vehicles and traffic chapter. It covers boat landing parking lots owned by Grant County, not residential yards or driveways. Storing a boat or RV at home is not what these sections address.

Where it applies. Section 267-7 bars parking a trailer used to haul a boat, canoe or vehicle at the Wyalusing boat landing parking lot, the O'Leary boat landing parking lot, or any other County-owned boat landing lot where the County has posted a sign requiring the permit. Section 267-10 has the County post those signs and lets the Grant County Parks Commission designate additional County-owned landing lots by placing a sign.

Price and where to buy. A permit valid for 24 hours costs $5 and an annual permit, valid for one year, costs $20 (§ 267-8A). Permits are sold by the Grant County Clerk at 111 South Jefferson Street, Lancaster, Wisconsin, or by agents the Clerk appoints. A 24-hour permit can also be bought at the landing by completing the application in duplicate, depositing $5 by check payable to Grant County or in cash with the original in the Grant County boat landing trailer parking lock box, and placing the duplicate in the lower left-hand corner of the windshield of the towing vehicle. Annual permits cannot be bought through the lock box.

What the permit records. The application lists the buyer's name and address, whether it is a day or annual permit, and the license plate number of the vehicle towing the trailer. The permit states its effective dates, the holder's name and that plate number, and it cannot be transferred (§ 267-12).

Exemptions and money. The Grant County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies need no permit when parking a trailer for law enforcement activities or water rescue operations (§ 267-11). All permit money, cash deposits and the County's share of forfeitures go to maintaining the Grant County boat launch sites (§ 267-13).

Violations & Fines

Parking a trailer at a posted County landing without a permit effective that day draws a citation from the Grant County Sheriff's Department or any other law enforcement agency in Grant County. The violator can settle by paying a $30 cash deposit to the County Clerk within 10 days. If unpaid, the citation is filed with the Clerk of Circuit Court, and a conviction means a $30 forfeiture plus court costs and surcharges (§ 267-9). Paying the deposit or forfeiture earns an annual permit (§ 267-14).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this rule cover parking an RV or boat trailer in my driveway or yard?
No. Article III of Chapter 267 reaches only trailers parked at the Wyalusing boat landing lot, the O'Leary boat landing lot and other County-owned landing lots where Grant County has posted a permit sign. It says nothing about residential yards or driveways, so those sections do not decide home storage of boats or RVs.
How much is a Grant County boat landing trailer permit?
Section 267-8A prices a permit valid for 24 hours at $5 and an annual permit, valid for one year, at $20. The 24-hour permit can be bought at the landing lock box with a completed application in duplicate and $5 by check payable to Grant County or in cash. Annual permits come only from the County Clerk or the Clerk's designee.
Where do I put the permit?
Section 267-8A directs the permit holder to place the permit in the lower left-hand corner of the windshield of the vehicle that is towing the trailer to the boat launch parking lot. For a lock box purchase, the duplicate copy of the completed application goes in that same corner of the windshield.
What happens if I park without a permit?
The Sheriff's Department or any other law enforcement agency in Grant County can cite you under § 267-9. You can pay a $30 cash deposit to the Grant County Clerk in Lancaster within 10 days to settle it. If you do not, the citation is filed in circuit court, where a conviction brings a $30 forfeiture plus costs and surcharges.
Can I lend my annual permit to someone else?
No. Section 267-12 says permits issued under the article cannot be transferred by the person or entity that received the permit to another person or entity. Each permit names its holder and the license plate number of the towing vehicle, so a borrowed permit does not match the vehicle being cited.
