Unincorporated SLO County allows storage of one RV on a residential lot but prohibits using it as a dwelling. RVs cannot be parked in the front setback except one self-propelled RV in a driveway. Living in an RV is only permitted in a state-approved RV or mobile home park.
The SLO County Land Use Ordinance permits residential property owners to store one recreational vehicle on their lot. The RV cannot be lived in or used as additional living space. RV storage is prohibited in the front yard setback, with one exception: a single self-propelled RV may be parked in the driveway. Living in an RV outside of a state-approved RV park or mobile home park is prohibited. Title 15 of the County Code (Traffic Regulations) prohibits overnight camping on streets and public areas in many community service districts including Cayucos, Avila Beach, and Oceano. Title 23 Section 23.08.266 sets coastal zone standards for RV park development.
Violations of land use restrictions on RV storage and habitation are handled by Code Enforcement under Title 22, with administrative citations and escalating fines. Overnight camping violations are infractions enforced by the Sheriff. Continued non-compliance can result in nuisance abatement.
