Auburn caps on-street parking at 72 hours in one spot (Code Sec. 22-26). State law (Alabama Code 32-5A-137), which Auburn enforces, bars stopping or standing in front of driveways, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, on sidewalks, on bridges, and on railroad tracks. Downtown adds paid, time-limited spaces.
On-street parking in Auburn is shaped by both city code and Alabama state law. Under Auburn Code Sec. 22-26, it is unlawful to leave any vehicle on any public street or other public way for more than seventy-two (72) hours. Beyond the time limit, Alabama Code Section 32-5A-137 (enforced by the city) prohibits stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle in front of a public or private driveway, within fifteen (15) feet of a fire hydrant, within twenty (20) feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, on a crosswalk or sidewalk, between a safety zone and the adjacent curb, alongside any street excavation or obstruction that would block traffic, on a bridge or in a tunnel, and on any railroad tracks; for parking specifically, vehicles must stay at least fifty (50) feet from the nearest rail of a railroad crossing. Downtown Auburn operates a managed parking program: surface (on-street) spaces along Magnolia Avenue, College Street, Gay Street, Tichenor Avenue, and Wright Street carry a two-hour limit enforced 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with paid spaces charging $1 per hour through kiosks. Parking is complimentary after 6 p.m. and on weekends. Illegally parked vehicles can be towed under the city's regulated towing program (Chapter 12).
Common violations include exceeding the 72-hour limit, parking in a prohibited state-law location (driveway, hydrant, crosswalk, sidewalk), and overstaying a downtown two-hour metered space without paying. Penalties range from citation to towing; downtown enforcement runs weekdays 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
