On-street parking in the City of Fairfax is generally permitted in residential areas unless posted. Parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, on sidewalks, blocking driveways, or facing against traffic is prohibited. Some residential streets have Residential Permit Parking District restrictions, especially near George Mason University.
The City of Fairfax regulates on-street parking under Chapter 98 of the City Code and through state traffic law at Virginia Code Β§46.2-1200 et seq. General prohibitions mirror state law: no parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk or intersection, within 30 feet of a stop sign or signal, on a sidewalk, in front of a public or private driveway, or against the direction of traffic. Overnight parking is generally permitted on public streets unless otherwise posted. The City has designated Residential Permit Parking Districts (RPPDs) in certain neighborhoods, most notably around George Mason University, where only residents with permits may park during posted hours. Parking restrictions posted on signs (time limits, rush-hour no-parking, street-sweeping) are enforceable and violations result in citations. Commercial vehicles over a specified weight and trailers are restricted from extended residential street parking. Snow emergency routes are designated and parking on these routes is prohibited during declared snow emergencies, with towing at owner expense. Unpaid parking tickets can accumulate, and the City can use DMV registration withholding through the Virginia DMV Vehicle Registration Withholding Program.
