Herndon, VA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

The Town of Herndon regulates street parking under Chapter 74 of the Town Code, authorized by Virginia Code §46.2-1220. On residential streets without posted restrictions, vehicles may park legally provided they are not left in the same location for more than 72 consecutive hours, after which they can be tagged as abandoned and towed at the owner's expense. In the Downtown Herndon commercial district along Elden Street and Station Street, time-limited parking of 2 hours is enforced Monday through Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM, with some metered spaces. Overnight parking (typically defined as 2 AM to 6 AM) of commercial vehicles over 12,000 pounds GVWR, trailers, or vehicles bearing commercial lettering is prohibited on all residential streets. Recreational vehicles, boats, and trailers may be parked on public streets for no more than 24 consecutive hours for loading or unloading purposes. Parking is prohibited within 15 feet of fire hydrants, within 20 feet of crosswalks, within 30 feet of stop signs, in marked bus stops, and on sidewalks or landscape strips. During declared snow emergencies, parking is restricted on designated snow emergency routes and violators may be towed. Handicapped spaces require a valid DMV-issued placard or plate. Fines range from 30 dollars for basic violations to 100 dollars or more for fire hydrant and handicapped violations.
