La Plata County, CO Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Article II of Chapter 54 of the La Plata County Code sets the parking rules for county roads in unincorporated La Plata County, Colorado. Section 54-32 applies the article to all county roads within the county and to the Durango-La Plata County Airport premises and grounds, so streets inside Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio follow their own codes.

Section 54-106 bars parking a vehicle on a street or highway in a way that interferes with the free movement of vehicular traffic or proper street or highway maintenance. Section 54-107 lists the places where no one can stop, stand or park, except to avoid conflict with other traffic or to follow a police officer or official traffic control device: on a sidewalk, within an intersection, on a crosswalk, on the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street or throughway, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and at any place where official signs prohibit stopping, standing or parking. Section 54-108 adds that no one can stop, stand or park on any portion of the main-traveled way of any highway, airport roadway or county road.

Signs drive the rest. The road maintenance director designates parking control zones on county roads under Section 54-56, and Section 54-84 requires signs that follow the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Designations go to the Board of County Commissioners and take effect unless the Board rescinds or revises them within ten days of receipt. Section 54-81 lists the zone types: no parking, no standing, no stopping, loading, restrictive parking and snow route, with tow-away usable in conjunction with any other zone. Section 54-110 bars using a restricted zone for any purpose other than the one on the sign, during the period the restriction is effective.

Peace officers, including reserve or temporary deputies commissioned by the county sheriff, can enforce the article under Section 54-85. A vehicle in a tow-away zone is taken to the storage lot operated by the towing operator, and towing and storage charges must be paid before or at the time of release (Section 54-60(V)). Section 54-58 makes a business that rents or leases motor vehicles liable for the parking fine unless it furnishes the name and address of the renter.
