On-street parking in New Orleans is governed by the Department of Public Works and enforced by the Department of Safety and Permits parking division. Many neighborhoods have Residential Parking Permit zones, metered districts cover the French Quarter, CBD, Warehouse District, and parts of Uptown, and posted street-cleaning, parade, and event restrictions are strictly enforced. Vehicles must follow Louisiana Revised Statute 32:190 and city rules on direction of parking, distance from intersections, hydrants, and crosswalks.
Parking on city streets is generally permitted unless signs, painted curbs, or local rules indicate otherwise. Vehicles must be parked on the right-hand side in the direction of travel on two-way streets, within 18 inches of the curb, and not within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk, or 30 feet of a stop sign or traffic signal. Parking on a sidewalk, in a marked crosswalk, in front of a public or private driveway, or on the wrong side of a one-way street is prohibited and routinely ticketed. Many residential neighborhoods have Residential Parking Permit zones in which non-residents are limited to two-hour parking during posted hours; eligible residents apply through the city for a permit decal. Metered zones cover much of the French Quarter, CBD, Warehouse District, and parts of Magazine Street and Uptown, with hours and rates posted at each meter and via the city's pay-by-app system. During Carnival season, posted parade routes are subject to towing windows, and during named storms, neutral grounds and certain low-lying streets are opened or closed for elevated parking. Street sweeping signs identify weekly cleaning windows during which vehicles must be moved or face ticketing. Tickets unpaid for extended periods can result in the vehicle being booted or towed by the city's contractor.
