Charlotte follows North Carolina state recording laws. NCGS ยง15A-287 makes it a Class H felony to intercept oral or electronic communications without the consent of at least one party. As a one-party consent state, you can legally record a conversation you participate in without informing the other parties. Video recording without audio in public spaces is broadly legal. NCGS ยง14-202 makes it illegal to secretly peep into a room occupied by another person, which has been interpreted to include surveillance cameras aimed into private areas. Using surveillance devices to photograph or record someone in their private residence without consent is a Class I felony under NCGS ยง14-202(d). Doorbell cameras are legal. Dashcams are legal in North Carolina. Workplace video surveillance in common areas is generally permitted but not in private spaces.
