In unincorporated Washoe County, letting property fall into disrepair or deterioration that contributes to blight and substantially reduces neighboring property values is a public nuisance under the Nuisance Code (WCC 50.308).
Washoe County Code 50.308 lists as public nuisances the maintenance of any property or structure in a state of disrepair or deterioration that could cause harm, damage nearby property, or "cause or contribute to blight and cause a substantial reduction of economic value of neighboring properties." "Blight" (WCC 50.304) includes accumulation of debris-refuse-rubbish, broken or rotting fencing, broken windows, and dead, dying or overgrown landscaping. Partially built or fire-damaged structures left unfinished six months or longer are also nuisances. Rules apply only to unincorporated areas; inside Reno or Sparks the city code governs.
Enforced by county code enforcement under WCC Chapter 125; the county may issue notices of violation, order abatement, and recover abatement costs against the owner.
