Kane County's nuisance code applies to vacant parcels: grass on a residential parcel cannot exceed 12 inches, noxious weeds must be removed, and junk, trash or refuse may not be deposited or stored. Vacant dwellings must also be registered with the county.
Chapter 15 of the Kane County Code governs 'Exterior Property Areas' on any property outside city or village limits, including vacant lots. Grass on a residential-use parcel may not exceed twelve inches in height, and all noxious weeds must be removed. Depositing or storing junk, trash, refuse, offal or garbage is a declared nuisance. A vacant residential dwelling must be registered with the Community Development Department within 30 days and inspected. Prairie plants and public natural areas are exempt from the weed and grass provisions.
Fine up to $500 per subsection; each day is a separate offense. The county may abate (mow/haul) and bill the owner after notice.
