Calvert County, MD Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Chapter 13 of the Code of Calvert County governs the Solomons Island Boardwalk, the wooden boardwalk running parallel to Maryland Route 2 on Solomons Island. Section 13-3 prohibits any person from operating, parking, standing, using or driving a wheeled recreational vehicle on the boardwalk, and defines that term broadly to include unicycles, bicycles, tricycles, roller skates, in-line skates, rollerblades, skateboards, or any motorized vehicle. The only carve-outs are baby strollers and wheelchairs or other aids to personal movement that a person needs because of a physical condition.

Section 13-2 requires the Department of General Services to post signs at regular intervals identifying the boardwalk and informing the public of the chapter's prohibitions, so the ban is meant to be visibly posted on site rather than left to word of mouth. Section 13-4 separately bars crabbing and fishing from the boardwalk, showing the chapter is built around keeping the walkway itself clear of recreational and utility uses rather than just wheeled traffic. Because Chapter 13 is limited to the boardwalk area on Solomons Island, it does not reach skateboarding elsewhere in the unincorporated county; riding a skateboard on a county sidewalk or parking lot outside that designated area is not covered by this chapter.

Enforcement and the fine schedule apply to the boardwalk's full set of prohibitions together under one penalty section, § 13-5, rather than a separate schedule for skateboards alone.
