Kent County, MI Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 22(b) of the Kent County Parks Ordinance, within the Sports and Amusements section, states it is unlawful for any person to roller skate, rollerblade, or use skateboards where such use is prohibited by the Kent County Parks Department. Rather than banning skateboarding outright across every county park, the Ordinance gives the Parks Department discretion to post specific locations, such as pavilions, walkways, or amenity areas, where skating and skateboarding are off-limits; skateboarding is otherwise allowed elsewhere in a county park unless posted. The same Section 22 structure applies to other posted-area sports restrictions: subsection (a) similarly lets the Department post areas closed to team sports and games, and subsection (c) does the same for golf practice.

Section 37(b) classifies a Section 22(b) violation as a municipal civil infraction, fined not less than $25 nor more than $500, the same tier as most of the other posted-restriction violations in Section 22. The Kent County Sheriff's Department enforces the Ordinance under Section 36 and may issue the citation on the spot; a court hearing a civil infraction case can also compel future compliance.
