Louisville Metro Code requires property owners to maintain premises rodent-free and remove harborage. Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness investigates complaints and may issue abatement orders for infested properties under Chapter 96.
Louisville Metro Code Chapter 96 (Health) and Chapter 156 property maintenance provisions require owners to keep buildings, yards, and accessory structures free of rat harborage. Owners must eliminate food sources, seal openings larger than 1/4 inch, and store garbage in rodent-proof containers. LMPHW responds to complaints, conducts inspections, and issues notices of violation. Failure to abate within the cited deadline (typically 10-30 days) authorizes the Metro Government to perform work and assess costs as a lien on the property. Chronic infestations may trigger neighborhood-wide baiting in coordination with Solid Waste Management Services.
Failure to abate after notice can result in civil penalties up to $500 per day, Metro performing the work at the owner's expense, and a lien on the property for cleanup costs.
