Full Breakdown

Lansing's Zoning Code lists Short-Term Rental as a Conditional Use, not a by-right use, in the R-1, R-2, R-3, and R-MX residential districts under the Section 1244.04 residential permitted-uses table; it is not listed at all for MFR or R-AR districts. Conditional-use status ties the operator to the city's separate Airbnb/short-term rental housing policy. In the Commercial Mixed-Use districts, short-term rental is conditional only in DT-1 (Downtown Edge) and is absent from MX-C, MX-1, MX-2, DT-2, and DT-3. Housing cooperatives are barred outright from being licensed or used as a short-term rental under Section 1250.02.13's conditions.

Violations & Fines

Operating a short-term rental without approved conditional-use status is a zoning violation; the Zoning Administrator/Code Compliance Office can cite the property and order the rental use stopped until compliance is obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent my Lansing home short-term on Airbnb?
Only with approved conditional-use status in an eligible residential district (R-1, R-2, R-3, R-MX); it's not automatically allowed, and the city's separate short-term rental housing policy also applies.
Are short-term rentals allowed everywhere in Lansing?
No. They're conditional-use only in specific zones, absent from the MFR and R-AR residential districts entirely, and outright prohibited inside housing cooperatives.
