Short-term rentals are banned in Santa Ana, so STR-specific noise rules are moot. All properties remain subject to SAMC Chapter 18, Article VI general noise standards: 55 dBA daytime and 50 dBA nighttime at residential property lines.
Because Santa Ana completely prohibits short-term rentals, there are no STR-specific noise regulations. However, all residential properties β whether occupied by the owner, a long-term tenant, or an unauthorized short-term guest β remain subject to the general noise control provisions of SAMC Chapter 18, Article VI. The exterior noise standards of 55 dBA from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM and 50 dBA from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM apply. Parties and gatherings that disturb the peace may also be addressed under SAMC Section 18-308 prohibiting loud and raucous noise. The STR ban itself was motivated in part by noise complaints from STR properties.
Noise violations are subject to administrative citations and fines regardless of the occupancy type. Operating an unauthorized STR adds additional violations on top of any noise citations.
