Plano STRs cap overnight occupancy at 2 adults per bedroom plus 2, bounded by the building code. Weddings and large commercial events are prohibited at single-family STRs without a special event permit.
The Plano STR ordinance adopted in April 2024 establishes a standard occupancy formula of 2 adults per bedroom plus an additional 2 occupants, with the absolute maximum capped by what the Plano building code permits based on square footage and egress. Infants under 2 are typically not counted. Operators must state the maximum occupancy on registration paperwork and cannot advertise or accept bookings exceeding it. Plano also restricts daytime event occupancy to discourage party-house use: large gatherings, weddings, and commercial events are prohibited unless the property holds a separate special event permit and is zoned appropriately, which single-family STRs generally are not. Responsible party information must be provided to guests and posted at the property so noise, trash, or overcrowding concerns can be addressed within one hour. Exceeding advertised or permitted occupancy is treated as a violation and counted toward enforcement action.
Fine up to 500 dollars per incident. Overcrowding counts toward STR registration revocation after repeated violations.
