Floyd County, GA Sidewalk & Pedestrian Rules: Sidewalk Repair (2026)

Sec. 2-16-2 of the Floyd County Code puts sidewalk construction and repair squarely on the county's public works department, which builds and repairs county streets and sidewalks, or directs that the work be done, whenever the Board of Commissioners orders it by resolution. Nothing in the section requires the property owner in front of a damaged sidewalk to fix it, and nothing sets a deadline or complaint process for the county to act, since the work proceeds only when the board resolves to authorize it.

3(a) of the Unified Land Development Code requires sidewalks along arterial and collector streets only inside the City of Rome, stating plainly that sidewalks are not required for developments located within the unincorporated areas of Floyd County. 3(b) sets construction specifics, including a minimum four-foot width and four-inch concrete depth in single-family residential areas and a five-foot width in commercial areas, located at least three feet back from the curb. The superintendent of public works, referenced in the same chapter's street-lighting provisions (Sec. 2-16-6), functions as the operational authority for this kind of infrastructure work, but the code gives that office no independent duty to inspect or repair sidewalks without board direction.
