High Point, NC Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Section 5.7.10, Electronic Sign Standards, splits digital signage into two tiers: electronic changeable copy signs, which display static alphanumeric text, and video signs, which can show full video content. Subsection C.1 restricts video signs to a single zoning district: video signs are only allowed in the CB District, High Point's Central Business District, unlike electronic changeable copy signs, which subsection B.1 allows across 8 districts including LB, GB, CB, RC, MS, MX, GCO, and SMO. Within the CB District, subsection C.2.a caps a freestanding video sign, a true digital billboard, at 32 square feet and 6 feet in height, and requires it to be positioned generally parallel to the street to minimize direct view from approaching traffic.

A lot with a freestanding video sign forfeits any other freestanding sign under subsection C.2.b, and the number of freestanding video signs is capped by street frontage: 1 per street front on a lot with at least 100 feet of frontage, plus 1 additional per street front once frontage reaches 200 feet, under subsection C.2.c. No freestanding video sign may sit within 25 feet of an intersecting right-of-way or closer than 50 feet to another freestanding video sign, under subsection C.2.d. Attached video wall signs face a parallel set of limits in subsection C.3, capped at 60 square feet, restricted to buildings with at least 100 feet of linear width, and barred from projecting more than 18 inches off the wall.

Every video sign must also meet the citywide illumination ceiling in subsection A.3: no more than 2,500 nits, dimming to 500 nits between sunset and sunrise, with a light-sensing device required to enforce that automatically.
