Lake Charles, LA Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Sec. " Subsection (2) bars any sign anywhere in the city unless expressly authorized by the section, and subsection (3)(a) narrows the field further: "only Monument Signs or Wall Signs are permitted," of monolithic construction with a base directly affixed to the ground and no visible posts, which rules out the standalone digital billboard structures common along interstates elsewhere. Monument and wall signs face height caps of ten feet, rising to 15 feet within interstate highway corridors, and any illuminated sign face, digital or otherwise, must automatically cut its lumen output by 75 percent between dusk and dawn under subsection (3)(d).

A true billboard, defined here as off-premises signage, is not a permitted use outright: Section 24-5-211(5)(a) requires a Minor Conditional Use Permit from the Planning Department for any off-premise sign in any zoning district, including the I-10 and I-210 corridors, and the city will approve a new one only by relocating and removing an existing permitted off-premise sign elsewhere in Lake Charles, at no larger size than the sign it replaces. Off-premise signs are further confined to defined roadway corridors, 100 feet on each side of a collector street, 200 feet along an arterial, 300 feet along an interstate, and must be spaced 500 to 1,000 feet from the next off-premise sign in the same corridor depending on face size.
