Hamilton County, TN Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Article V, § 202(L) (Heights and Vertical Clearance) sets a special rule for interstate-adjacent signage: within 660 feet of the right-of-way, a detached on-premise sign may rise no higher than 30 feet above the lower of the finished grade at the nearest controlled access facility or the finished grade of the public road the sign is oriented toward. That is more generous than the formula for all other roads, where a sign set back ten feet from the right-of-way is capped at 20 feet, gaining one additional foot of height for each additional foot of setback up to a 35-foot maximum, while freestanding directory and monument signs are capped at 8 feet regardless of road type.

Any interstate-facing sign is also independently subject to Article V, § 202(I), which requires signs along State Scenic Highways, Interstate Highways, the Primary Highway System, or the Parkway System to meet Tennessee's own location and size standards; the county's issuance of a sign permit through the Hamilton County Building Inspection Department is expressly not a guarantee that the sign satisfies the state's separate requirements, leaving that compliance burden on the applicant. Detached on-premise signs everywhere in the county are additionally capped at 125 square feet in surface area under § 202(E), and a sign permit application must go through the Director of Building Inspection before construction begins.
