Jackson County, GA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 745 of the Unified Development Code carves out a special sign category for properties with frontage on an interstate highway, on top of whatever other signage the property already qualifies for. Interstate signs are permitted only in commercial and industrial zoning districts shown on the county's official zoning map, and each parcel may display only one sign facing any given direction, though back-to-back or 'V' formation signs are allowed as long as they don't duplicate the same direction. The sign must sit within 660 feet of Interstate 85 and within a 1,500-foot zone that begins 500 feet from where the pavement widens for the nearest entrance or exit ramp, and no more than three interstate signs are allowed per quadrant of any interchange.

Size and height are capped too: the sign face cannot exceed 672 square feet, monopole structures top out at 70 feet, and every other sign type is limited to 35 feet, with a minimum ten-foot ground clearance measured from the lowest point of the sign face to the interstate pavement. Interstate signs must be spaced at least 500 feet from the next permitted interstate sign, measured between the two closest points, and no part of the structure may sit closer than ten feet to a property or right-of-way line.

Before the county will issue a permit, the applicant must first submit proof that the Georgia Department of Transportation has approved the sign as complying with the state's outdoor advertising statutes and administrative rules.
