Full Breakdown

Section 30-154 governs interstate highway interchange area signs, defined to identify on-site fuel, food, lodging, camping and repair services visible from I-75. Only one such sign structure may stand in each quadrant of an I-75 interchange, though it can carry messages facing both directions of travel. The signs are flatly prohibited in the eastern quadrants of the Alico Road and Corkscrew Road intersections with I-75, and, except at Daniels Road, every sign must sit within one-quarter mile of the interchange's midpoint (one-half mile at Daniels Road).

Size scales with height: up to 400 square feet for a sign 50 feet or shorter, up to 500 square feet between 50 and 75 feet, and up to 750 square feet for a sign between 75 and 100 feet, with 100 feet as the absolute ceiling measured from average interstate grade. In the western quadrants of Alico and Corkscrew, height is capped at 50 feet and area at 400 square feet, though the owner may also erect one additional on-site sign that isn't counted against other sign-area limits in the chapter.

Every sign must clear a minimum height of 30 feet at its base and sit back at least 15 feet from street rights-of-way or easements. Applicants must secure a letter of no objection from Southwest Florida International Airport where the Building Official determines it's needed, plus a notarized consent letter from the property owner if the applicant isn't the owner. These signs are excluded from the County's general sign-area and sign-count calculations elsewhere in Chapter 30.

Violations & Fines

An interstate interchange sign erected without Building Official approval, exceeding the quadrant limit of one structure, or built taller or larger than the height-based area table allows is treated as an unlawful sign under Section 30-51. Section 30-8's removal procedure applies: a 15-day certified-mail correction notice, an opportunity to appeal within that period, and, absent a timely appeal, County-ordered removal with costs assessed as a lien against the property, accruing 12 percent annual interest if unpaid within 45 days.
