Pawtucket, RI Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Pawtucket's zoning ordinance confines all off-premises billboard signs to the Industrial Open (MO) and Industrial Built-Up (MB) Districts under § 410-60, and ties each billboard type to specific highway-adjacency rules. The billboard, bulletin type category, § 410-60L, must sit within 600 feet of the freeway line of an interstate highway; it caps out at 675 square feet of sign area and 25 feet of height, with cutouts and extensions governed by the state Department of Transportation's Rules and Regulations for Outdoor Advertising. No new bulletin-type billboard may be erected going forward, the ordinance only allows a new sign to replace an existing nonconforming one.

The thirty-sheet poster type billboard, § 410-60M, uses the same MO/MB district filter but widens the qualifying road to any interstate or state-classified primary highway; it is capped at 300 square feet and 50 feet in height, and each one must stand at least 500 feet from any other thirty-sheet poster billboard. The eight-sheet poster type, § 410-60N, drops the highway-adjacency test but keeps the district limit; it tops out at 100 square feet and 16 feet in height, must sit at least 10 feet back from any public right-of-way, and at least 100 feet from any residential district. All three categories must also conform to the Rhode Island State Building Code and, where applicable, RIDOT's outdoor advertising rules.
