5, the Table of Standards for Off-Premises Advertising Signs, sets a spacing formula for freestanding signs advertising lodging, food, outdoor recreation or automotive service facilities along interstate highways: no such sign may be erected or maintained within two miles approaching an interchange; only six may be erected or maintained between two and five miles approaching an interchange; beyond five miles approaching an interchange, an average of only one sign per mile is allowed; no sign is permitted within 1,000 feet beyond an interchange; and no more than two such signs are permitted within any one-mile stretch, with a minimum 1,000-foot spacing between them.

The area and height standard listed for this interstate tier is 150 square feet and 30 feet, and the sign must sit along the interstate highway within 660 feet of the edge of the right-of-way, subject to the applicable district setback line. " A separate standard in the same table governs signs along non-interstate federal highways, permitting no more than one per mile and requiring the sign to sit entirely within the setback lines without projecting into the right-of-way. 7 and is not subject to this off-premises table.
