Citrus County, FL Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Citrus County's Land Development Code treats yard sale and garage sale signs as a category of temporary sign in Chapter Nine, Section 9270(E)(5). The LDC's general temporary-sign ceiling is 40 square feet, but the garage-sale category carries its own tighter limit: the sign cannot exceed eight square feet in area, and it has to be set back from any property line by at least five feet. No permit is required for a compliant sign.

The sign is only allowed to announce a 'Yard Sale' or 'Garage Sale' being held on the same parcel where the sign is posted; it cannot be used to direct traffic to a sale happening elsewhere, since advertising for an event located off the parcel is treated as a different sign category and would fall under the LDC's offsite-sign rules in Section 9280 instead. Beyond the size and setback limits, the sign still has to meet the temporary-sign placement standard in Section 9270(A): it has to sit on private property, outside any required buffer, landscaping strip, off-street parking area, or stormwater detention or retention area, and it must comply with the county's building and electrical codes under Section 9270(B).

This provision governs unincorporated Citrus County only. A garage sale sign posted inside the Crystal River or Inverness city limits is subject to that city's own sign ordinance rather than this county section.
