Dothan, AL Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 18-273(5), part of the yard-sale article in Chapter 18 of the Dothan City Code, sets the placement and removal window for yard-sale and garage-sale signs and expressly ties them to the sign standards in subsection 14-516(13) of the same Code. Signs advertising a yard sale may be posted for a period not to exceed four consecutive days, a window that includes the day or days of the sale itself, so a two-day sale allows signs to go up two days before the sale starts at most.

Once the sale concludes, every sign must be removed within 24 hours; leftover signage left standing past that 24-hour window is out of compliance even though the sale itself was lawful. The rule also polices where signs go: any signage placed on property other than the authorized location, meaning property where the owner or occupant has not consented, is subject to seizure without notice, so the city does not have to warn a sign owner before pulling an unauthorized sign from a right-of-way, utility pole or a neighbor's yard.

Because the sign rule sits inside the same section governing sale frequency and duration (Sec. 18-273), a resident planning a permitted yard sale should treat the sign timeline as part of the same compliance package as the sale permit obtained under Sec. 18-274, not a separate approval.
