Section 56-31 of the Code of Ordinances defines a garage sale sign as an on-site temporary stake sign advertising a garage sale, yard sale, or estate sale at an occupied residential property that has obtained a certificate of occupancy. No sign permit is required to put one out, but the code confines placement to the private property of the residence holding the sale: a sign cannot be staked in the public right-of-way, a neighbor's yard, or a vacant lot down the street. It also bans attaching the sign to a vehicle, fence, pole, tree, median, or railing, and prohibits using balloons or wind devices in place of a stake sign unless those items independently meet the separate permit and size rules that apply to balloons or wind devices.

Size is capped at six square feet of copy area and four feet of height, the same dimensional limit the code applies to realtor, homebuilder, HOA, school, and religious stake signs under the same article. Because garage sale signs are unpermitted, code enforcement typically catches violations through complaint-driven inspection or during routine sign sweeps rather than a permit review, and an oversized or improperly located sign is treated as a prohibited sign under section 56-32.
