Full Breakdown

Fayetteville does not carve out garage- or yard-sale signs in UDC Chapter 174, and Sec. 174.08(H) makes it unlawful to erect any off-site sign. That means the usual practice of posting directional sale signs at intersections or on neighboring lots is not permitted. Signs on utility poles (Sec. 174.08(L)) and on right-of-way trees (Sec. 174.08(K)) are separately banned, and Sec. 174.07 reserves the public right-of-way for government signs. The compliant option is a single on-site sign at the sale, placed on your own property under the non-commercial sign allowance in Sec. 174.03(H).

Violations & Fines

Off-site or right-of-way garage-sale signs may be removed by the city and can draw a citation. Signs attached to utility poles or to right-of-way trees are prohibited and subject to removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put garage sale signs around the neighborhood in Fayetteville?
No. Fayetteville bans off-site signs under Sec. 174.08(H), so directional signs on corners or other lots are not allowed. Post one sign on your own property instead.
Can I staple a sale sign to a utility pole?
No. Section 174.08(L) prohibits signs on utility poles and Sec. 174.08(K) bans them on right-of-way trees. The city can remove them.
